WSUS Sync Errors after ConfigMgr Migration

With a lot of clients migrating from Configuration Manager 2012 R2 to Current Branch lately, I frequently see issues with WSUS and the Software Update Point after the migration. What seems to happen is that following migration, clients begin to hammer the new Software Update Point with requests, causing the Software Update Point to crash. You’ll see evidence of this in the component status for the Software Update Point, as well as WSUS Synchronization errors as well as other Software Update Point status logs and alerts.

365 Days

There are only 365 days left until the end of extended support for Windows XP. That means that after April 8, 2014 Microsoft will no longer provide extended support for commercial customers using Windows XP, and will no longer provide new Windows Updates for Windows XP. You will be on your own. As of next April, XP will have been around for nearly 12 years. It’s time to upgrade.

See this great article for details on what Extended Support means, and the implications of deciding to stay with Windows XP beyond next April.  http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/springboard/archive/2013/04/08/365-days-remaining-until-xp-end-of-support-the-countdown-begins.aspx

Cumulative Update 1 for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1 released

If you are running SP 1 of Configuration Manager 2012, Microsoft released an update Friday that you should definitely evaluate. Plenty of fixes for ConfigMgr issues including MicrosoftPolicyPlatformSetup.msi file now being correctly signed and a lot of new PowerShell cmdlets.

Head over to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817245 to download the update.

Me vs. the Apple Fan Boy

Sometimes I hate public transit.

This morning as I settled into my seat on the Skytrain for the 25 minute trip into downtown Vancouver, I pulled out my Samsung Slate 7, running Windows 8 Customer Preview, to catch up on some email. About two stops later a guy got onto the train, sat beside me, and pulled out his iPad.

I didn’t even notice him until I heard a “Hmmmm” from beside me. I ignored it.

“Hmmmm. Is that Windows?” he asked?

“Yes, Windows 8 Customer Preview.” I swiped across the screen to show him the Metro start page, then swiped back to Microsoft Outlook and went back to reading my email. Read more of this post

6451B in Edmonton, then MMS

I’ll be in Edmonton the week of March 14, 2011 running a 6451B Planning, Deploying and Managing Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 course, then to Vegas for Microsoft Management Summit. I expect to have lots of interesting tidbits to post following MMS. I’ll be focusing on SCCM 2012, SCSM 2010, and Opalis Integration Server at MMS this year.
